Rome Sentinel Friday Oct. 2, 1931 HENRY BIRD, Canal Captain, dies at Age of 75. Oneida, Oct 2 – Following an illness of several months, Henry Bird, 75, died at the home of his niece, Mrs. Otto Castle, at 308 high bridge street Fayetteville, Thursday afternoon. Until his retirement four years ago, Mr. Bird was a captain on the New York State Barge canal and before that on the Erie canal. He was born May 25, 1856 in New York City. Mr. Bird never married. Surviving besides Mrs. Castle are three brothers, James E. Bird of Rome and Peter and William Bird of Oneida; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Smith of Fayetteville and Mrs. Emma Lambert of Syracuse and five nieces and six nephews.
