WEEDSPORT, Nov 3 — John Heffron of Durhamville,22, a boatman belonging to the J. ZP. Loughlin, was drowned about one o’clock yesterday morning while changing horses about half a mile west of Centerport bridge. Heffron was lowering the horse bridge when he slipped on the wet deck and fell into the canal . His father was nearby, but at first supposed it was a deck pail that had been thrown in. Heffron shouted “Save me.” twice, but his father could not reach him from the boat and before a pike pole could be obtained, Heffron sank for the last time. The unfortunate man was unable to swim and this doubtless was the cause of his drowning, as the bank was not far distant. He was 22 years of age and a son of Capt. Charles Heffron. Coroner Eldredge of Ira, decided an inquest was not necessary. The body was taken to Durhamville for burial in the Irish Ridge Cemetery. John Heffron was the son of Charles Heffron and brother to Stacia Heffron, who survive him. It was a great shock to the community, where he had only friends, to learn of the fatal accident. He was a quiet and kind young man, free from its habits and a general favorite. Universal grief is felt at the sad taking away.
Eternal rest grant unto him, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
