Leona Messenger
1915-1935

ROME — A sister and brother met tragic death early today at Wright’s Bridge, near Greenway, when a heavy car failed to negotiate a sharp curve in the road, plunged to the roadbed of the New York Central tracks, 33 feet below and was demolished by a fast eastbound passenger train. The victims were Maurice and Leona Messenger, 23 and 20 respectively, children of Mr. And Mrs. Fred Messenger of Durhamville. The youth met instant death when hurled out of the car as it struck the tracks, roof first, but it has not yet been determined whether his sister met death in the same manner or was killed when the train plowed into the wrecked sedan. His body was found alongside of Track 3 over which the train passed but up until noon today only a few bits of the girls body had been recovered. There were no indications the brother’s body had been struck by the engine.

GIRL ESCAPES WRECK

A third person in the car, Miss Helen Pavelka, 18, daughter of Mrs. Barbara Pavelka and the late Paul Pavelka, although in a dazed condition and suffering from severe knee and head injuries crawled from the car and made her way to the home of Clarence Salisbury, a quarter of a mile distant. Graphic details of the train’s crash was related by Miss Bessie Fox, an employee at the Salisbury home, who was summoned to the scene by Miss Pavelka. Miss Fox informed authorities she heard a loud crash about a half-hour before the arrival of the Pavelka girl, but paid little notice to the incident.

Eternal rest grant unto them, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
